Black History.

Phillis Wheatley (1753-1784)

Phillis Wheatley was a poet. Phillis was born in West Africa and when she was a young girl she was sold to a family called the Wheatley's. She was named after the ship Phillis.

When she was a slave , she was taught to read and write which was unusual at the time.

At the age of 14 she wrote her first poem and when she turned 20 she came over to England with her son and within a year she had Published her first book!

Phillis changed a lot in regards to how people looked at women and slaves with her intelligence and this helped the anti-slavery movement.
